Feeding and latch issues, tongue and lip ties, and jaw tension related to skull plate compressions — these show up constantly in practice, but almost nothing in standard manual therapy training covers how to address them effectively and safely in an infant. Practitioners either refer everything out, miss important cues, or do what they can and hope it's enough.

 

Working Inside a Baby's Mouth: Scope, Safety, and What's Actually Involved

The courses cover assessment of the tongue, cheeks, lips, and jaws: structures directly related to how a baby suckles, latches, and feeds. Relationships to newborn birth trauma to the head, neck and body teaches you how to avoid missing contributing causes of poor swallowing and mouth movement. Assessing and releasing tension in all associated structures is why osteopathy helps infants so much.

That being said, evidence-based studies support the improvement of feeds when ankyloglossia is present. Learn how to screen for this condition for confident referrals to dentistry.   1. Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTS) — Foundational anatomy, first. You'll learn oro-pharyngeal anatomy and TOTS definitions with classifications so you can recognize them. Co-taught with Dr. Mandeep Johal, DDS, Joanne Lynne explains why results of a frenectomy aren't fully realized when a baby also has torticollis, cranial plate compression, or shoulder and throat restrictions. This course covers the integration of dentistry and osteopathy needed for the best frenectomy outcomes and best evaluation of sub-clinical ties. It also includes manual therapy techniques for anatomical dysfunction of the oro-pharyngeal complex, when to refer out for suspected ties, and when to hold off for a few treatments first. 5 hours CEU.
  2. Intra-Oral Treatment — Hands-on skill, second. This course teaches you how to assess the hard and soft tissues of the head, face, mouth, throat and jaws so you can treat safely and effectively inside a baby's mouth. Using flowcharts, photos, and six real-time video case studies, Joanne takes the guesswork out of what to do in the oral cavity. From cranial shape issues, to palatine bone compressions, from suspected ties to shoulder injuries, learn how the function of the mouth is impacted by these common issues. When babies can't suckle or swallow properly, feeding improves drastically once the mouth is addressed directly — and it's not optional to skip. 5 hours CEU.
  3. Infant Latch, the Jaw and Tongue — The bigger picture, last. A baby's behaviour is very telling when latch problems are present but interpreting the signs can be confusing.Taught solely by Joanne, this course covers the inter-related function of the mandible, hyoid, and tongue within the context of baby feeding. Using functional anatomy, flowcharts, and side-by-side videos comparing good and poor latch, this course rounds out the entire oral function collection for best treatment outcomes. Suckling and latch disorders connect back to cranial injuries, plagiocephaly, tongue restrictions, and jaw injuries — it's all connected. 2 hours CEU.

Taken separately, each course answers parts of an intricate system. Taken as a group, you come out able to assess, treat, and understand why — raising the bar for best outcomes in the babies you see in your practice.

 

Taught by a Practicing OMP and a Dentist, Not Just an Osteopathy Perspective

Joanne Lynne, BSc, M.OMSc. is the founder of Best For Baby Osteopathy and has specialized in paediatric and prenatal osteopathic care since 2015. She holds a Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Therapy from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy (graduating top of her class with the Andrew Taylor Still Award of Excellence) and a Certificate in Paediatric Cranio-Sacral Technique from The Cranial Centre. She trained directly under Dr. Jonathan Evans, a Registered Osteopath in Australia. She leads the Treating Babies Apprenticeship, Canada's first blended paediatric osteopathy certification program, offered each February.
